You can ask them who their favorite member of the group is, and they’ll probably tell you that Harry Styles or Louis Tomlinson or Zayn Malik or Niall Horan is their favorite. They might even name all five of them as their favorites, but one person was shocked to learn that there’s actually another singer that most people prefer over One Direction in America, and this person never expected it to be true! Her latest album 1989 sold more than one million copies within its first week of release and even reached number one on Billboard’s list of 2014’s best selling albums.
Bruno Mars
The famous songwriter and performer who last year released his fourth album, 24K Magic, garnered a whopping 20 percent of all mentions. The chart-topping crooner was followed by Ed Sheeran at 19 percent and country singer Luke Bryan at 12 percent. Rounding out the top five are country superstar Blake Shelton at 9 percent and pop singer Justin Bieber with 7 percent.
Maroon 5
As of September 2013, Maroon 5 had sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. The band won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist at their first appearance on the awards show in 2006.
Ed Sheeran
Hands down, he’s one of my favorite singers right now. But I didn’t know his song The A Team was so popular! I guess it makes sense that he just beat out Beyonce, though. The lyrics are easy to remember and a lot of people can relate to his music. Plus, Sheeran’s looks help him be a sex symbol—which helps drive ticket sales for live shows and album sales.
Beatles or Elvis Presley
You may think The Beatles or Elvis Presley are still holding down their spots on top of American music charts, but as it turns out—you’d be wrong. In fact, you’re way off. Based on a poll taken by Zimbio, Britney Spears has been voted number one, beating out rivals Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus by a long shot!

According to Nielsen Music’s 2012 Year-End Report, it was revealed that Miley Cyrus was not only 2012’s most popular recording artist in terms of sales and radio airplay but that she also beat out international stars including Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Rihanna. The Party In The USA singer has sold 2.65 million albums across both physical and digital formats during 2012 while spending 34 weeks atop Billboard’s Top 200 album chart during 2012.
Demi Lovato
Lovato’s recent hit song Stone Cold topped iTunes charts for multiple weeks and she has been nominated for numerous awards. She ranked third on Forbes’ Celebrity 100 list, raking in $57 million last year alone. Lovato won Favorite Pop Artist at 2017 Kids’ Choice Awards, while her single Sorry Not Sorry also won Favorite Song. She picked up a Billboard Women in Music Award earlier this year, becoming one of only 11 women who have ever won it twice.
